Senate Disruptions Continue over Judges

by Daniel McConchie on June 5, 2008

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell continues his efforts to draw attention to the utter failure of Senate leadership to honor promises to bring a number of federal circuit court nominees forward for an up or down vote.

Senator McConnell today shut down Senate committee hearings by objecting to their continuance pursuant to the “two-hour rule”. (See here under point 5.)

Particularly worrisome is the fact that Senator Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee has “threatened to shut down the confirmation process completely.”

Conservatives have benefited in the past by pointing out the extreme views of the Senate Democratic leadership on judicial confirmations and the lengths they will go to keep highly qualified candidates off the federal bench. Senator McConnell should continue and expand these tactics until the Senate leadership gives in or election day – whichever comes first.
