Congressional Leaders Pull Stop Abuse Bill over Parental Rights
By Daniel McConchie | June 25, 2008
Last night, House leaders abruptly pulled HR 5876, the Stop Child Abuse in Residential Programs for Teens Act, from the floor over a Motion to Recommit that would have required that any facility covered under the bill have a policy in place to require parental consent before distributing any prescription medication, including contraception and Plan B.
However, instead of allowing a vote on this issue, Democratic leadership invoked a procedural rule to suspend consideration of the bill.
By blocking a vote, House leadership is killing an effort to involve parents whose children are in residential treatment programs in their child’s important medical decisions - especially on the distibution of drugs that can cause abortions.
