Congressional Leaders Pull Stop Abuse Bill over Parental Rights

by Daniel McConchie on June 25, 2008

Last night, House leaders abruptly pulled HR 5876, the Stop Child Abuse in Residential Programs for Teens Act, from the floor over a Motion to Recommit that would have required that any facility covered under the bill have a policy in place to require parental consent before distributing any prescription medication, including contraception and Plan B.

However, instead of allowing a vote on this issue, Democratic leadership invoked a procedural rule to suspend consideration of the bill.

By blocking a vote, House leadership is killing an effort to involve parents whose children are in residential treatment programs in their child’s important medical decisions – especially on the distibution of drugs that can cause abortions.
