Stem Cells: Adult vs. Embryonic

by Matthew Eppinette on October 17, 2008

In the comments, Gary asks:

I heard Mr. McConchie on KTOK in OKC this morning and I understood him to say that we have no proof of embryonic stem cell research producing any results but there is alot of evidence adult stem cell research helping people. Can you please provide links to these statistics.

Thanks for asking, Gary. Great question.

Our friends at the Do No Harm coaltion have a website devoted to the successes of adult stem cells. They list 73 diseases and conditions where patients are experiencing benefits from adult stem cells. They include a list of peer-reviewed resources (PDF) to back their claim.

In contrast, the number of conditions being treated with embryonic stem cells is 0.

For more on stem cell research, see Working for Cures, Not Clones: An Overview of Cloning and Stem Cell Research from our book Defending Life, Mr. McConchie’s testimony before the Oklahoma House this week, and Adult Stem Cells from The President’s Council on Bioethics.
