AUL in The Washington Times

by J. Margaret Datiles on November 3, 2008

My op-ed on Washington State’s Initiative 1000 appears on page B5 of yesterday’s (Sunday’s) Washington Times.

The article discusses the dangers of WA I-1000. The measure would legalize physician-assisted suicide and create financial incentives for healthcare insurance companies to deny coverage for life-saving medications and push patients to commit suicide. It would also require physicians to falsify death certificates and endanger those suffering from depression and other common, treatable mental illnesses. Moreover, it would allow those with financial interests in the death of a patient to facilitate and participate in the suicide of the patient. Lastly, I-1000 would also deny family members the chance to speak and see loved ones who have chosen assisted suicide before they died.
