Missouri House Passes Bill Banning Coercing Pregnant Women into Getting an Abortion

by Melanie Johnson on March 13, 2009

CHICAGO - Today, the Missouri House passed HCS HB 46 & 434, a bill that bans coercing a pregnant woman into getting an abortion.  Additionally, the bill enhances the state’s informed consent law by allowing women to view and hear an ultrasound prior to getting an abortion, and gives women information about the pain their unborn child feels during an abortion.

AUL President & CEO Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D. praised the Missouri House’s action saying, “No woman should be forced into getting an abortion by a husband, boyfriend, or employer.  Too many times in our country, pregnant women do not have adequate recourse when they are being coerced.”

AUL Vice President of Government Affairs Daniel McConchie said regarding the bill’s passage, “It is common sense to provide a pregnant woman who is considering an abortion with all the options and information to help her make an informed and uncoerced decision.  We encourage the Missouri Senate to quickly follow suit and Missouri Governor Nixon to sign this bill into law.”
